Port Williams

It is the Bay of Fundy’s shape that is largely responsible for its now famous high tides. In the upper reaches of the Minas Basin the norm can vary from 9 to 12 meters and the spring high tides can occasionally reach 16 meters.

The incoming tides rush with powerful force up the long funnel of the Bay of Fundy into the Minas Basin forming tidal waves at the head of the basin in the rivers like this, the Cornwallis. As each tide recedes it leaves behind a deposit of nutrient rich mud.
